An exotic looking American “soft” wood. A wonderful mix of reds, browns, and purples and rated by the USDA in the same rot resistance category as the tropical hardwoods such as Ipe.
Classified as a softwood, although it is just as hard as Red Oak. Often marketed as Eastern Red Cedar or Aromatic Cedar, Eastern Juniper is the juniper family, not the cedar family and it is often confused with its softwood Western USA counterparts. Eastern Juniper is much more rot resistant than the cedars and nearly 3 times harder. It makes a wonderful decking and siding option, and with its abundance in our American forests its at a great price point. Eastern Juniper posts are also a great use of this species as the posts will greatly outlast pressure treated options.
